The shadow transport secretary's planned visit to Leeds today has been cancelled - because of a broken train.

Labour's Andy McDonald was due to be at the city’s main railway station to talk about rail be at the city’s main railway station to talk about rail ticket prices rises.

But the planned visit has had to be cancelled because he is now stuck on a broken down train and won’t be able to make the appearance.

Average rail ticket prices have risen by 3.4% across the UK, in the biggest increase to fares since 2013.

How ironic.

Ah, that'll be why there were loads of Labour Party people handing out leaflets this morning at Leeds Station. FWIW, my season ticket has gone up by £5 a month, or 1.2%.

1D08 seems to be on the move now, and according to VTEC twitter (to which I've been tweeting as well) - will terminate there.......

-edit- It's JUST terminated (at 1249) running some 130 minutes late!!!

By the state owned manufacturer British Rail Engineering Limited or at least the Class 91 locomotive was in any case. :D

The class 91 was designed by GEC and built under subcontract by BREL Crewe (BREL being privatised during the construction period).
The Mk4 coaches were also built by GEC (Metro-Cammell).
Alstom will have some residual interest in the designs.

Yep, he is using this to promote nationalisation:

My day of campaigning has been interrupted by a broken down train on the recently bailed-out Virgin East Coast on the same day fares are hiked by 3.6%. Let’s take our railway back into public ownership!
Yet to see any of their working behind claims that nationalisation would equal lower fares and better quality service... but then anything in service of a good soundbite.

McDonald was already critical of VTEC following Lord Adonis' recent comments - he'll have another reason to add to his list of criticisms now!

Incidentally Grayling can't talk to the media about rail fare rises today as he's on 'official government business' in Qatar - yes the transport minister is visiting a country without any railways.

They do however have a very ambitious light rail and heavy rail programme which could well bring work to UK design and construction firms. I don't like the man greatly but if he can get a chunk of that work given to us instead of say, China, then great!

He's the Secretary of State for Transport so is responsible for roads, maritime and rail. Paul Maynard is the Parliamentary Under Secretary for Rail (and other things).

As well as their rail programmes, Chris Grayling may want to be talking to them about maritime capabilities given that the UK is importing LNG from Qatar and we'd all like to keep warm in the winter.

The broken down train (1D08) is now sitting in the "siding" at Newark Northgate (running as 5D08)

Let's hope they didn't accidentally leave Andy McDonald on it.

It's looking like a bad day for Virgin Trains East Coast!

Don't DB already have a contract to deliver those projects?

I accept there's more to his brief than rail but wouldn't the supply of LNG come under the brief of the Energy minister?

He does aviation too, in which Qatar are significant operators to the UK.
The also have pots of money to potentially invest in HS2, Network Rail, and Heathrow Airport.

I knew it had gone wrong when I pulled up along side this after it had overtaken me at Tallington! It's not often you run via Stoke and Oakham in the same shift!

And still used by the private operator despite being 30 years old.
And being replaced in the next two years.

Absolutely ridiculous that every single problem on the railway is supposedly solved by nationalisation. What needs to happen is a restructure of the franchise system into a more long term, less government involvement. Minimum service requirements only; everything else should be up to the TOC.

I do wish there was a law requiring politicians, particularly Ministers or Shadow, to produce sources for any public claims they make.

With nationalisation and Brexit among others, people make wild claims of benefits that don't seem to have ever actually been backed up by any independent studies.

Who has said every single problem would be solved by nationalisation?
