I've just been reading though the Shack attacks thread.

A couple of quick questions
Do you get off at every station?
Do you guys have an aim, of just how long it will take you?

I'll count it if I have
a) boarded or alighted from a train there and
b) seen almost all of the public areas of the station

so the same service can count if it sits there for 20 minutes for example, but 'cheating' by simply setting foot on the platform and jumping back on does not scratch it for me. Equally if its a large station and I am only there for 3 minutes I would feel the need to go back later, although I might still post about that on here if it were a large station I'd never been to before (because there aren't many).

I don't have a particular aim other than to enjoy myself!

A few exceptions apply, e.g. Sugar Loaf, which I have visited and certainly seen all of (there isn't much to it!) but I haven't used a train there. I wouldn't 'count' it therefore, but it wouldn't make sense for me to now go to the significant cost and effort of getting a train to that station, if you know what I mean. A few other exceptions apply but ultimately I'm practical and sensible about it.

My general rule is that I will get off a train at X and continue either on another service or carry on by other means of transportation. Jumping off and back onto the same train doesn't count for me, nor does simply stopping there.

I do have exceptions for that last rule, which is that I'll count stations by simply calling there if they're otherwise inaccessible. Redcar British Steel is one I counted by such means earlier this year, as it's not entirely accessible from anywhere but the platforms and the fiootbridge between them! Lympstone Commando is another one I would count via just stopping there as that's not accessible to the general public either. I'm not sure if any others exist like that. One day I may make such an exception for places like the Far North line, what with the many shacks up there being rather remotely generally speaking.

I'm quite happy to walk between one station and another and count it, which is how a few of them on the Heart of Wales got done. Indeed, I was driven to other shacks on that line, a special trip report is in this thread some pages back.

Would you count if you used a bus between stations (so alight from service at say Belmont and catch a bus from outside the station to Sutton to avoid an hour wait?)

Or if you get off a boat and walk over to the station and then walk back to the boat because the canal is right next to Hatton Railway Station?

Thanks for your explanation Techniquest on Shacks and how you do them. Yes it would make sense walking between stations especially when they're so close.

Today I thought about my local line the Abbey Flyer, Watford Junction to St Albans and wondered how I'd spend 40 minutes between trains when there's bugger all to do at, How Wood, Garston and Park Street, but at least at Bricket Wood there's a pub across the road.

Just seen this thread. I will post anything new from now. Just for the record I have so far visited 880 stations that are on the main national rail network. I will at some point sort out a preserved line one and then move onto Tube and light rail.

My rules are pretty much the same as Techniquest. I too walk between stations if they are close. The other exception (unless i missed it) is that if I get to a station and the train i'm on forms new service I count the station as I would have got off for a photo. e.g. if I have got to the end of a branch line the return will be the same train but new service is formed.

I've lost track of how many I've visited now, well overdue to do a thorough count. I can tell you there's a LOT of ticks in the index of my Baker! I aim to have counted them all up by 15th June.

I see we've all got similar rules, and in answer to your question Kite159, yes I would.

In general I totally agree with you, but I would count a station when jumping off and back onto the same train if:

1. It was to go from one unit to another that is part of the same train.

2. If you are to stand at a station for 20 minutes or so waiting for a train to come off the single line either to stretch your legs or to take pictures, see my trip report for Fort William for the two West Highland Way incidents that bagged me two stations like this.

I wouldn't do it though if it was a five second hop straight off and back on, I would say it would have to be an unscheduled wait of some time at a station to count for me.
