Saturday 6 December

With a South Pennines Day Ranger, I wanted to clear as many Hope Valley stations as possible.

But first, I tried to do Clifton (one train each way per day). The morning service was cancelled and a stop order was added an hour later, but that would have meant me wasting 2 hours, so I'll try again on a future trip to Greater Manchester.

So I then did:

• Ryder Brow
• Belle Vue, then bus to
• Reddish North
• Bredbury
• Brinnington
• Chinley
• Strines
• Hope - I was planning on spending an hour here as the Manchester train and the Sheffield train depart at the same time. But the Manchester train was 5 minutes late, so I legged it over the bridge to re-visit Edale and go to the Penny Pot Cafe next to the station for lunch (rather than the 15 minute walk into Hope village for food) and then head east again for
• Grindleford
• Bamford and
• Dore & Totley

before a bus into Sheffield and the train home.

Monday 8 December

With my Northern Rail complimentary return ticket, I travelled to Keighley to buy snacks from the Asda opposite the station which opens at 6am, then two tight connections at Carnforth and Barrow got me to:

I had an amazing walk on a sunny day along the beach to Nethertown. My intention then was to get the train from Nethertown to Corkickle (which would have been two ticks), and then the replacement bus to Whitehaven to head home via Carlisle. However, most of the afternoon services along the Cumbrian coast line were cancelled due to train crew issues. So I had to tweet Northern for them to send a taxi to Nethertown, which got me into Whitehaven, then Carlisle, then home 2 hours late.
