Hi all. There is a tempary SGB job in Fort William. What exactly would this be doing based there and would it lead to a perminant contract? Does anyone internally at scotrail know anything about this position and what exactly it is? Cheers dudes

Not at all, the shunter will be on the ground giving instructions to a Driver either by radio comms or the use of hand signals to carry out various moves.

Think of "Shunter" as a person, not as a locomotive (08 etc)

TBH I think the salary could do with being a bit higher seeing as they expect you to do:
Shunting (Safety Critical)
Train Dispatch (Safety Critical)
Train Preperation (cleaning, flushing, tanking)
Clean the station as well!!

I can see it now, a bardic in one hand, a dispatch baton in the other and a broom shoved where the sun don't shine!

Not necessarily if you're acting as ground staff. The Driver will move the train.

The shunting In this particular role is to speak to the driver by radio In order to propel the Caledonian sleeper stock back into the platform after servicing and couple/uncoupled the loco.
