Anybody know what was the cause of this, around 0900 Friday 10th December?

Seemed to start with the 0630 Glasgow to Euston which was delayed 30 mins between Wigan and Warrington.

The 0747 from Barrow to MC Airport lost 84 mins between Boars Head and North Western. And 20 mins more to Bamfurlong. Terminated at Oxford Rd.

0652 from Edinburgh was delayed 136 mins just north of Wigan. 0730 Euston -EDB was delayed 100 mins between Bamfurlong and WGN and terminated at Preston.

1006 to Blackpool North (from Liverpool) departed WGN at 1325. 3 hrs 20 mins late.

String of further delays and cancellations.

There seemed to be a problem during the night, e.g. Inverness sleeper 1S25 delayed 227 minutes around Wigan, and several northbound intermodal services delayed.

Then it seemed OK around breakfast time, e.g. 1S37 Euston - Glasgow got a clear run through.

Then the problem seemed to return. From Crewe, several Avanti services were diverted via Manchester and continued northbound from Preston; e.g. 1S48 and 9S54.

(This from Realtime Trains).

The 1109 from Crewe to Edinburgh diverted via Manchester, meaning the 1111 Crewe to Piccadilly had to run behind it, so it was obviously an issue for a number of hours.

It seems like there were similar problems in the Wigan area again this morning for about an hour.
