most TOC, perhaps, didn’t get the same level of co-operation from their ASLEF reps.
They're also not permitted to hire more train crews than the roster will call for. Word on the street is that certain depots got incredibly lucky with service increases that were hired for but will never now be introduced.

Well, we where recruiting extra staff for a Saturday service on a Sunday.

We are diffinately not "incredibly lucky". Rest day work may well be non existent.

And they are powerless at doing any real kind of revenue protection these days. Hard core fare evaders know they can't be stopped/touched by them !!
So are you saying that because hard core fare evaders know they can't be stopped/touched by them, then everybody should be allowed to become fare evaders? Or what exactly is the point that you are making?

Generally it has been whole new services or frequency increases rather than only for Sunday enhancements. In addition, a Sunday enhancement could potentially be funded again in a few years if there's a change to a government that is happier to subsidise rail operations than this one (or maybe the current one will be persuaded by some corrupt means). Whole new services or frequency increases may now be judged to require infrastructure interventions to achieve.

Todays info is DB Cargo no date on voluntary severance roll out.
TOCs ‘first quarter of 2022’
Other FOCs ‘TBC’
Network Rail ‘early Jan 2022 for next phase’.

I'm not sure why DB Cargo would be relevant to this? They are not a signatory to the agreement with the TUs AFAIK, and as an open access operator they have no reason or incentive to act in lockstep with the "franchised"/government funded part of the industry? If they are looking to make redundancies I would have thought they would do so under their own processes and timescales.

Most TOCs have rolled out their voluntary severance schemes earlier this year (as you can see by the previous comments in the thread). Your "info" is not correct.

I suspect @Trainer2 may be referring to the dates people are told / leave, rather than when the schemes begin? At my TOC staff were originally due to be told if they’d been accepted / declined in late November, then by mid-December, now it’s some point in January. Allegedly those leaving were to go by the end of March at the latest - with the date to be mutually agreed, not sure if that’s still the case or not.

I have to admit I’m not sure why the FOCs are relevant though as they should be separate to this process.

I am fairly sure it is on a case-by-case basis dependent on the role they are in & agreed with their manager / HR.

At NR, the whole thing has been a joke. No clear criteria and no future plan.

Instances of people in the same role but in different areas applying and one being approved and the other rejected.

Important roles being approved and the work just being left as you can leave without notice.

Maintenance and Ops’ haven’t been touched yet but they are that short staffed to begin with it is hard to see it happening.

Happy New Year!

I heard Maintenance could apply from Jan 5th, I’m sure the axe was out for the lads even before this came about unfortunately.

Anyone else feel that knife cutting into an already brittle bone ?

I don’t know how it all works, simply passing on information.

It doesn’t look like this severance will affect FOCs much.

Network Rail is a different kettle of fish; it seems likely the track gangs will get the opportunity to leave.

happy new year to all

It was pointed out to you in September when you commented that, like all FOCs, DB Cargo hadn't signed the agreement so I'm unsure where the confusion is coming from.

Exactly, the private profit or loss FOCs aren’t under any pressure from government to cut costs, to the contrary their pretty lean as it is when it comes to shop floor costs…

Apparently at our place (TOC) the review is now complete and decisions will be communicated from Monday onwards.

Network Rail have already allowed a number of experienced staff to leave the company under this system. It still isn't an option for operations and maintenance staff, but a few signaller colleagues would leave if the payment amount was worth it.

Yesterday, the people who had applied for the above received the decision on wether they will be receiving this. Despite a high uptake at my company from the roles that wanted it, a lot of them caterers, only a handful of chefs were granted it. So, if this was to cut weight and save costs, it seems to have not really pulled through. The question is why if the main aim was cut costs.

Sadly it wasn't designed to be a nice reward for long service.

Giving a customer host or dispatcher it then having to train another customer host or dispatcher does nothing but give someone who wants to leave 25 grand or whatever.

I assume that when the VR was announced, the company would have worked out how many staff they wanted to let go, and the redundancies would of been handed out accordingly?

It has varied from company to company. Some companies have lost people from roles not easily replaced.

Of course, it being voluntary, they can't just be 'handed out' if the people the company had identified don't apply for it.

It's not redundancy, so there are differences compared to if this was a voluntary redundancy scheme.

I’ve heard only 15 people at one TOC got it. Despite dozens applying. Seems a bit of a damp squib.

Yes I've heard of a few get it, but in a very haphazard and inconsistent manner. Some are complaining to their unions that applications have been not been treated on merit or fairness and are at the whims of management.
