Sevenoaks to Canary Wharf

Hi guys,

Thanks to your advice a year ago I currently commute from Sevenoaks to Canary Wharf via LBG with a split season ticket, a paper one for Sevenoaks to Zone 4-6 and an oyster card with Zones 1-3. My tickets are due to expire today and I am sorting out the renewal. I need to come in on Monday so I could just renew both tickets to start then, however I also have £8.50 PAYG credit on my oyster so I was wondering whether I could use that? Could I renew the National Rail bit from Monday and use Oyster PAYG to pay for the leg from Z3-Canary Wharf? Is this possible and if so how and what ticket do I need to buy...

Are you planning to buy the season on your Oyster for zones 1 -3 after you have used your PAYG credit?

What time are you travelling?

You can use PAYG as long as you touch in within Zones 4-6.

Yes - I am planning to buy another season ticket - it's just that I don't need to travel on Tuesday so can get a couple of days extra if i use the PAYG...no biggie really.

how would I touch in as I will be on a train?

If you want to pay by Oyster pay as you go for part of your journey, you will need to get off and touch in somewhere. You could do this at Orpington but you would then pay for zones 1-6 mixed journey, which would knock out your PAYG credit in one single journey at £6.90. You could alternatively do so at Grove Park (the last station where your ticket is valid). In that case you would need to get a stopping service, and would quite possibly have to get off and get the next train.

I guess what I'm saying is it's probably less hassle to renew the two tickets from when you want them renewing, and forget about PAYG. If you really want the £8.50 back you could always get your Oyster card refunded and get a brand new one with your new season ticket on it. And if you're not travelling on Tuesday, perhaps an Anytime Day Travelcard from Sevenoaks to London Zones 1-6 (£25.30) will better meet your needs on Monday.

It appears they charge a £10 admin fee to refund the £8.50 credit...!

Alternatively, I don't suppose I can use the credit towards buying the season ticket?

That doesn't sound right... if you hand in your Oyster you get the money back (and the Oyster deposit) with no admin fee.

edit: This site says that up to £5 is easily refundable, more than that you need to fill in a form...

Thanks - looks like i was reading some out of date info.
Don't think it helps though as i got my card before deposits so i would have to give back £5 of the £8.50 to get a new one!

Probably best just to leave the credit there in the hope that I can use it one day!

There is no fee to refund an Oyster card's credit. There is no deduction. If you got the card without paying a deposit, you'll be refunded the credit and no more. So yes, as you say, you would end up with only £3.50. Your call
