I take it you are referring to Ashton-under-Lyne
Stretford (Hough Moss) and Ashton under Lyne (Ashton Moss) were both areas of marshy wetlands that had a very early earthwork defensive barrier called the Nico Ditch constructed between these two areas to protect the local people against Viking raiders from the period when such incursions were prevalent.
