The Chatham dockyards were attacked and fifteen Royal Navy warships destroyed during the Raid on the Medway at the end of the second Anglo-Dutch War in 1667. In 1665 the war had opened with the Battle of Lowestoft which was considered a victory for the English although the bulk of the Dutch fleet escaped to fight another day.
