Though it was historically part of Lancashire, the many boundary changes in the area have resulted in Portsmouth now being part of Calderdale, West Yorkshire. The same changes have now resulted in Barnoldswick "moving" for local government terms from Yorkshire to Lancashire.

The Pontnewynydd Ironworks produced much of the corrugated iron for the WWII "Anderson Shelters" which saved many lives. Less well known are the reinforced concrete "Stanton Shelters" produced by the Stanton Ironworks, Ilkeston, Derbyshire.
