Dr John Bodkin Adams was born in Randalstown in 1899. He qualified as a doctor and in 1922 started in practice in Eastbourne, Sussex, catering for the wealthy and aged of that health resort. He had a good bedside manner and was popular with, especially, the ladies, many of whom showed appreciation in their wills. It was therefore a shock when Bodkin Adams was charged with murder of two of his patients and tried in 1957, but the local establishment rallied behind him and he was acquitted, although he was almost certainly guilty, and, like Dr Shipman to come, not just of the crimes for which he was tried but a very large number more. He died in 1983.

Eastbourne grew as a fashionable tourist resort largely thanks to prominent landowner William Cavendish, later to become the Duke of Devonshire.

Although the Cavendish family estates are centred in Derbyshire, the Cavendish family descends from Sir John Cavendish, who took his name from the village of Cavendish, Suffolk

Margaret Susan Cheshire, Baroness Ryder of Warsaw, Baroness Cheshire, CMG, OBE - usually known by her maiden name of Sue Ryder and founder of the eponymous charity, opened its first home for concentration camp survivors in Cavendish in 1953. Although the original home is closed, the charity now runs hospices and palliative care homes across the UK and has spun off related charities in many countries of the world. Its headquarters are at Sudbury in Suffolk.

Venn Ottery Common, west of the village, is a nature reserve owned by the Devon Wildlife Trust. It is part of the East Devon Pebblebed Heaths, a nationally important lowland heath area and site of special scientific interest. Bovey Heath is an area of heathland near Bovey Tracey in South Devon and also a Devon Wildlife Trust nature reserve.

Syston is the location of the headquarters of Pukka Pies, which is one of the largest employers in the town, employing 250 people. The company sponsored the 2009 UK Snooker Championship (officially the 2009 Pukka Pies UK Snooker Championship), which took place between 5th and 13th December 2009 at the Telford International Centre in Telford. The winner, China's Ding Junhui, was awarded his body weight in meat pies, 276 to match his 69 kg weight. He later announced that he would donate all the pies to a charity based in Sheffield that helps the homeless over the festive period.

Monmouth has connections to Charles Rolls, son of Baron Llangattock, whose family mansion was just outside the town. In 1904 Rolls formed a partnership with Henry Royce to create Rolls-Royce Ltd. Royce had no aristocratic connections, being born in Alwaton, Cambridgeshire, to a farming family.
