The great (albeit rather overlooked these days) Victorian satirical novelist Robert Smith Surtees (1805-1864) is buried in the churchyard at Ebchester. He was born and spent most of his life at Hamsterley Hall, Hamsterley, Co Durham, but died at Brighton.

In 1667 Dutch troops landed in the Felixstowe area prior to attacking Landguard Fort. Had the attack succeeded, it would have opened the way for a planned Dutch naval assault on Harwich. Thirty-two years before, in 1635, Dutch troops landed at Blyth, Northumberland, and searched the town and nearby areas for the crew of a Spanish privateer, which had sought refuge in the port after sinking numerous Dutch fishing boats.

The power station chimneys at Blyth were a Northumberland landmark for over 40 years, until they were demolished in 2003. The chimney of Fawley power station was similarly a landmark over a large part of southern Hampshire until it was demolished in 2021.

The town's major sporting club was Featherstone Rovers, a professional rugby league club who competed in the Championship, the second tier of British rugby league. However, they were not granted RFL membership for the 2026 season due to the club's financial difficulties and effectively ceased to exist. Another club which has has financial difficulties over the years are Salford RLFC. They are currently a semi-professional rugby league club based in Salford; they play home games at the CorpAcq Stadium, Barton upon Irwell (also known as Barton-on-Irwell or Barton).

The George and Dragon at Flockton Green is one of the oldest public houses in England, dating from 1485. This is now The Arc. Pubs are fertile ground for tall tales, with many claiming to be the oldest pub in England.

The George Inn in Norton St Philip, Somerset, has the strongest claim to be England’s earliest surviving purpose-built inn. It was originally built in the late 14th century for the Carthusian monks of Hinton Charterhouse to provide accommodation for merchants attending the monastery’s markets and fairs.

The King (then Prince Charles)'s first footsteps on Welsh soil were to the south of the village on the beach at Lindsway Bay, whilst the royal yacht was anchored in Dale Roads. Dale is the local village and is located on the peninsula which forms the northern side of the entrance to the Milford Haven Waterway.

Twm o'r Nant (aka Thomas Edwards aka Tom o'the Dingle) (1739-1810) was a Welsh language dramatist and poet. He married Elizabeth Hughes at the church in Llanfair Talhaiarn in 1763. He had a varied life, working as a contractor in additional to his literary projects. In 1808 at the age of 69 he was working on the construction of the Cob at Porthmadog, Gwynedd. (I am precluded from mentioning the railway connection here).
