The Talbot hotel in Tregaron is said to have an elephant buried in its grounds, but the origins of the story are unclear. Inhabitants of Kingswood in Gloucestershire tell a similar story but with more detail - the elephant is said to be Nancy who was with Bostock & Wombwell's menagerie which visited the place in 1891. Nancy is rumoured to have died of eating yew leaves, but the location of her grave is unknown despite a modern search with ground penetrating radar.

Hardenhuish in Wiltshire was also once administered by the Hundred of Chippenham, which covered an area in both Gloucestershire and Wiltshire.

Hardenhuish parish church has a monument to the eminent economist David Ricardo (1772-1823) who is buried there. Ricardo, whose ideas included the concept of competitive advantage and the law of diminishing returns, was born in the City of London, but spent much of his later life at Gatcombe Park, Minchinhampton, Gloucs, a property now inhabited by the Princess Royal.

Boarhunt has nothing to do with male pigs or hunting; the name probably means 'the fort - burh - by the stream -funta.

A not dissimilar place name is that of Bedfont in SW London, on the fringes of Heathrow Airport. It too has a funta element, though the 'Bed' part is open to interpretation: a gravel bed, the personal name Bede (though not that one), or a Germanic drinking vessel.
