The manors of both Sturminster and Newton (originally separate villages on either side of the River Stour) were given to Glastonbury Abbey by Saxon kings, respectively Edmund Ironside in 1016 and Edgar the Peaceful in 968.

From Knott End on Sea you can follow the Lancashire Coastal Footpath as far as Hest Bank, from where if you are fit and have a good guide you can walk across the sands of Morecambe Bay to Kents Bank in Cumbria
