Greywell is at one end of the Greywell Tunnel on the Basingstoke Canal, now blocked by a roof fall. The other end is near the village of Up Nately, Hampshire. The portal there has collapsed and the canal appears to end in a very sinister looking green pool in the middle of thick woods, with a mysterious dark hole on one side. Just the place for some sort of monster!

BTW - Sorry to disappoint, but the Golden Pot is apparently a biblical reference - it resided in the Ark of the Testament and contained "hidden manna" which was a memory of how God had sustained his people in the desert. And the Golden Pot at Shalden has just been turned into a bijou housing development! Sign of the times in perhaps a metaphorical as well as a physical sense!

Cupar in Fife also has a teaching campus of the Scottish Agricultural College.

Cupar was made a Royal Burgh in the early 14th Century. By that time Berwick on Tweed had been a Royal Burgh for at least 200 years, but Berwick was finally captured by English King Richard III in 1482 so lost the status. Cupar retained it until 1975 when Royal Burghs were abolished by Act of the Westminster Parliament.

Gawsworth was the home of Samuel (Maggoty) Johnson, dancing teacher, jester and playwright, who is buried in Maggoty Wood there. He is nothing to do with the better known Samuel Johnson, poet, author, political writer and literary critic who is buried in Westminster Abbey.
