Parson Jack Russell -- a 19th-century rector of Swimbridge -- was, presumably in his spare time, keenly engaged in dog-breeding: whereby he gave to the world, the Jack Russell terrier. Associated settlement arrived at, admittedly via rather tortuous processes: involving another kind of terrier named after a person (sort-of), with links to a named place. This is the Dandie Dinmont. The name is taken from a character in Sir Walter Scott's novel Guy Mannering -- said character reckoned partly based on the real-life James Davidson, originator of the breed in its present form: Davidson's work considered to be development of a strain of dogs first bred and kept by the Allan family of Holystone, Northumberland -- some seven miles west of Rothbury.
