There follows an episode which I used in this game a year ago -- story which resonates with me: I feel a bit sorry for the beaten Spanish Armada -- the ordinary personnel thereof, anyway (can afford to feel that way, with our having soundly thrashed 'em

). it concerns one of those ships of that fleet -- this one the galleass
La Girona -- which tried to head for home the long way round, going round the top of the British Isles, and thence into the Atlantic.
La Girona, badly damaged, put into Killybegs harbour seeking shelter and succour; which she and her crew got from the local chieftain -- plainly glad to do what he could to thwart the Brits. Patched-up, the ship then set off initially back northward, aiming for Scotland and presumably, further help there -- rather than heading straight for Spain; one assumes that the decision made sense to those concerned. Going round the north of Ireland, the ship got into trouble and struck Lacada Point near
Ballintoy, Co. Antrim (5 miles west of Ballycastle), with the loss of almost all hands. The very few survivors (in single figures), rescued by the locals: were with considerable care, sent by the local chief to Scotland; whence they could realistically expect ultimately to get back safely to Spain. It would certainly seem that Celtic high-ups in those times, were eager to make life difficult for John Bull in whatever ways -- however tiny -- came to hand for them.
