West Bromwich suffered badly in the second world cholera epidemic which occurred from 1830 to 1834. It reached Britain via the port of Sunderland in October 1831 and spread rapidly across the nation.

Wrexham was given city status by Queen Elizabeth II in 2022. Seven other locations were also named cities at that point, one being
Douglas
on the Isle of Man.

Resorting to my old pal W.S. Gilbert: the "Nightmare song" (When you're lying awake with a dismal headache...) in his-and-Sullivan's comic opera Iolanthe, mentions -- among other places -- South Kensington; and Harwich, Essex.

I'm perhaps being a bit naughty on this game at present: but -- "hack" fiction about old-time combat, frequently goes on about swords and bucklers (= shields). There is in Hampshire, the hamlet of Bucklers Hard: on the Beaulieu River, a couple of miles inland from said watercourse's debouching into the Solent.

John Rae (1813 -- 93) -- surgeon, explorer of far-northerly parts of North America, and highly accomplished "outdoorsman", was born in Stromness. He studied medicine in Edinburgh.

A one time major employer in Belfast was Shorts, most famous for flying boats such as the Sunderland. However, before being at Belfast, they were at
Rochester
on the River Medway.

I know we had the Manx capital only the day before yesterday; but I find this one hard to resist. Douglas (I.O.M.) also has its name as one of two elements in the names of coniferous trees -- Weymouth pine and Douglas fir.

Invergarry is at the southwest of Loch Ness, which itself is at the southwest of
Strathnairn. These three locations form an acute Δ.

In Maentwrog is The Grapes Hotel, a 17th-century Grade 2 listed coaching inn. Goosnargh, Lancashire -- a few miles north of Preston -- has a pub also called The Grapes.
