Sir Humphrey de Trafford (18087 -- 86), 2nd Baronet of that title, was born at Croston; on his succeeding to the title in 1852, he moved to the family home, Trafford Hall in Trafford Park, Greater Manchester. Sir Humphrey was strongly but unsuccessfully opposed to the inauguration of the Manchester Ship Canal, fearing that that scheme would badly muck up his cherished Trafford Hall.
