Llanwrtyd Wells is situated in the large area of more-southerly central Wales called by topographers / naturalists "the Green Desert of Wales", or the "Cambrian Desert" -- not altogether an approving term: very thinly-populated and in some ways "good for nature"; but with original vegetation largely removed by centuries of overgrazing. Also located in this region is Tregaron, Ceredigion.

Dick Strawbridge -- TV presenter and ecologist and seemingly in many ways, splendidly eccentric guy -- lived with his family for a while, early-ish this century, in Tywardreath. He was educated at the High School of Ballyclare, Co. Antrim.

Market Harborough had a Peacock Hotel until its incorporation in 1993 in a new pedestrianised shopping centre called St. Mary's Place. A good way south-east, in Kent: there is a Peacock Inn, notionally in Goudhurst; but it would seem, perhaps nearer to Cranbrook.

St Mary's church in Goudhurst was an important sighting point for triangulation during the Anglo-
French survey of 1784-90, an undertaking that led to the creation of the Ordnance Survey. The measured base line for this triangulation, undertaken by General William Roy, RE ran across Hounslow Heath from Kings Arbour (a location in what is now the northern side of London Heathrow Airport) to Hampton Poor House (now Roy Grove, Hampton, west London)
