A little way from Cerrigydrudion are the Alwen and Llyn Brenig reservoirs -- the former created about half a century before the latter -- which supply water to Merseyside and further afield in north-west England. Some forty miles to the south are the Elan Valley reservoirs, created a little earlier (very early 20th century) than the Alwen, supplying water to Birmingham: nearest significant settlement to Elan Valley reservoirs is Llansantfraed Cwmdeuddwr, Powys.

Aberdare (Rhondda Cynon Taf) is another Welsh settlement twinned with a settlement in the German State of Baden-Wuerttemberg. Llandrindod Wells's "twin" is Bad Rappenau; Aberdare's is Ravensburg.

Aberdare is termed 'the Queen of the Hills'; Ealing in west London is known as 'the Queen of the Suburbs'.

Somewhat far-fetched association here, maybe; but -- link is, "sounding like" the same general -- or elements in -- field of activity, re "-ing" verbs / nouns related to "people hunting / pursuing / killing" other life-forms. "Ealing" sounds like the word for fishing for eels; and there is, from the days of fox-hunting, the taking and dispatching (for reasons which made sense to those doing the business) of -- some -- fox cubs: "cubbing". Thus -- admit a bit of cheating -- Cubbington, Warwickshire -- just north-east of Leamington Spa.

Cubbington has a silver band, who have competed in the National Brass Band Championships. The current title holders are Flowers Band from Gloucester.

The Shah Jahan mosque in Woking - visible from the South Western main line on the Down side about three quarters of a mile before raeching the station - was the first purpose-built mosque in these islands, completed in 1889.. However the very first mosque was converted from a terraced house in West Derby, Liverpool, earlier in the same year.

Bedworth in Warwickshire is another settlement that was connected to the trade of ribbon weaving.

Bedworth leisure centre was a venue for the fine sport of wrestling, as shown on ITV's World of Sport in the 1970s and 80s. Another venue for Big Daddy, Giant Haystacks etc al was Leeds Town Hall (where as a dedicated grapple fan I saw them in 81or 82).

There are occasional instances of a town's being twinned with more than one town, in the same foreign country (always seems a little greedy to me). Leeds is a case in point; as is the London Borough of Sutton. (Respective "double-twins", in Germany in both cases: Dortmund, and Siegen; and the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district of Berlin, and Minden.)

James Hunt ("Hunt The Shunt", shunt being an old word for a minor car crash) lived in Sutton as a child. His first British Grand Prix was at Silverstone (Northamptonshire) in 1973.

Silverstone village is located in the forest area -- of considerable antiquity -- Whittlewood Forest; village's chief trade having been for centuries, in timber therefrom -- there is still an operational woodyard in Silverstone today. The "Whittle..." name theme also occurs in that of the village of Whittlebury (Northamptonshire), a mile or so to the east, and on the edge of the forest.

Whittlesbury's pub is called - unsurprisingly for a boozer in hunting country - The Fox and Hounds. A pub of the same name is to be found at Barnston on the Wirral.

Waterford also has a namesake settlement -- albeit prefixed with "New" -- in Canada. The two are, incidentally, at opposite extremities of the country. New Westminster is in British Columbia -- part of "Greater Vancouver"; New Waterford is in Nova Scotia, on Cape Breton Island.

Waterford is known for the manufacture of glass; so too is St Helens, Merseyside.

St. Helens under that name, is something relatively recent -- name as such, dating from the mid-18th century. The settlement basically in this location, was previously known as Windle -- there is a local stream still called the Windle Brook. Not very far away geographically, but seemingly "no relation"; is the hamlet of Windle Hill, Cheshire West: situated between Neston and Willaston.
