Clerkenwell in the London Borough of Islington also lies on the line of the River Fleet.

Something of a railway reference, follows: but I feel -- as on previous occasions -- that I can get away with it as "social history rather than gricing". In past centuries, there was a semi-rural part of Clerkenwell called Black Mary's Hole: scene of various low-life doings. The name has a certain similarity to the locality called Batty Wife Hole -- which name, still lingering in the area today, originated as that of a temporary shanty-town for workers on the construction of the Settle & Carlisle rail route. Nearest settlement of any note, to B.W.H. : is Ingleton, North Yorkshire.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (of Sherlock Holmes -- and much other fiction -- fame) was married to his first wife, at Thornton in Lonsdale in 1885. Doyle was educated -- not very happily, if the truth be known -- at the Catholic school of Stonyhurst: at Hurst Green, Lancashire (between Clitheroe and Longridge).

North Walsham gets a (very) glancing mention in the -- much-loved by me -- Flashman novels by George MacDonald Fraser. The same can be said of Penzance, Cornwall: with which, in these books, the anti-hero / first-person narrator Harry Flashman, seems strangely obsessed -- as far as the reader can tell, he's never been there.

It would seem that there can be downsides to Lowestoft's thus being "way out east". In women's football; the Lowestoft Ladies football team were disbanded in the early 1980s -- cause, per Wikipedia: "unfortunately, due to their geographical location, they were refused entry into several leagues..." Shortly before this unhappy development, Lowestoft Ladies won the Womens' F.A. Cup, beating Cleveland Spartans (based in Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire).
