Ledbury in Gloucestershire was also once commercially served by the Herefordshire and Gloucestershire Canal.
Slightly frantic desperation re this one... the local magnates around Underskiddaw were the Williamson family of Millbeck Hall; one of whom got into bad trouble under accusation of treasonous conspiracy, toward the end of the 16th century. Another and much more recent Williamson -- in all probability nothing to do with these Cumbrian ones; just sharing the name -- was Henry, most famous as the author of Tarka The Otter, but a highly prolific writer with many other books to his name. In the late 1930s, Henry W. -- till then, resident in north Devon -- bought and ran a farm near Stiffkey, Norfolk.Underskiddaw in Cumbria was also once under the jurisdiction of the Cockermouth Poor Union.
With all due respect to the settlements concerned -- Dunwich, Suffolk: is another essentially small and obscure coastal one; which has nonetheless an Anglican Suffragan Bishop.Richborough in Kent also lay on the route of the Roman road known as Watling Street.
