Stoke Holy Cross has a pub called -- honestly ! -- the Wildebeest Arms. Unsurprisingly, a pub name unique in Britain; but it has -- again, strange but true -- a counterpart at least in zoological terms (same animal, different names) in the shape of the Gnu Inn, North Newbald, East Riding of Yorkshire (a little way south of Market Weighton). The Yorkshire hostelry was formerly the New Inn -- a bit of wordplay, one gathers, on the part of those in charge, to make things more individual and interesting.
