Certain ports around the UK's coast are policed by their own dedicated non-Home Office police forces, constituted under the Harbours, Docks, and Piers Clauses Act 1847.

The Falmouth Docks Police is one such force. Another (part of the Port of Bristol Police) is responsible for policing the Royal Portbury Dock at Portbury in Somerset.

My bete-noire Jane Austen died in Winchester, and is buried in the city's cathedral. She was born at Steventon, also in Hampshire (between Basingstoke and Whitchurch).

For naturalists: the Up Nately Local Nature Reserve includes the Greywell Tunnel on a long-disused section of the Basingstoke Canal; the tunnel is an important hibernation site for several species of bat. Another notable bat location, is the country park at Ryton-on-Dunsmore, Warwickshire -- a few miles south-east of Coventry.

Thanks to the local landowner not allowing overhead electric lines, aerials, or satellite dishes in Downham: the village is a popular location for filming period dramas. With a rather similar "times past" aspect -- thus in demand for the same reason -- is Castle Combe, Wiltshire (north-west of Chippenham).

One would guess (Wiki gives no info here) that Slaughterford's name is -- rather than referring to gory martial doings long ago -- derived in part from the Old English "slough" = wet land. This is the case with Lower Slaughter (and its neighbour Upper Slaughter), Gloucestershire -- in the Cotswolds.

Irresistible let-in to a favourite theme of mine: "Thankful Villages", none of whose menfolk were killed in the World War(s). Upper Slaughter is one of Britain's few "doubly thankful" villages, which lost no men in either World War I, or II. Another such is Flixborough, North Lincolnshire -- near Scunthorpe.

Horkstow is one of the five "Low Villages" between Brigg and the Humber estuary, so-called because of their position below the northern edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds. Another one of the five is Bonby in North Lincolnshire.

Born at Eglingham, was the Rev. Henry Baker Tristram (1822 -- 1906): theological scholar, traveller, and eminent ornithologist -- his travels chiefly in North Africa and the Middle East. Named after him, are a number of assorted species discovered by him; including the in my view wonderfully named bird Tristram's Grackle. He sold his extensive collection of bird skins amassed in his voyaging, to the World Museum of Liverpool.

On the general Norfolk Broads river system: Norwich is the meeting-point of the River Yare and its tributary the Wensum. Further east, near the coast; another meeting-point of rivers is that of the Yare and the Waveney, near the village of Burgh Castle, Norfolk. After this confluence, the Yare broadens for a couple of miles into the open-water area of Breydon Water, before narrowing again and flowing into the sea between Great Yarmouth and Gorleston-on-Sea.

"Unlikely couplings" -- Rustington features in The Gnu Song by Flanders and Swann, together with Ashton-Under-Lyne (Greater Manchester) --

I had taken furnished lodgings at Rustington-on-Sea / Whence I travelled to Ashton-Under-Lyne ...

Delph lies just off the A62 road. Liversedge (Metropolitan Borough of Kirklees) is located on said road.

The Savile Arms at Thornhill is one of the only three pubs in England that is built on consecrated ground adjacent to the local church and remains the property of the Church of England. The other two are The Ring o' Bells at Kendal in Furness & Westmorland and The George at Hubberholme, North Yorkshire.
