A resident of Stonegrave -- and buried there -- was Robert Thornton (c.1418 -- 1456): local lord of the manor, and a "rare bird" for his time -- an amateur scribe and manuscript-compiler: activities usually the preserve in that era of, as Wiki puts it, "professional scriveners and ecclesiastical scribes". Robert's "product" -- long preserved by his heirs -- Wiki again, "resulted in the preservation of many valuable works of Middle English literature". Some of same, is now in the library of Lincoln Cathedral; some, in the British Library in London.
