Wigtown is known as 'Scotland's Book Town' as a result of the large number of second-hand and antiquarian book shops there. Northern England's equivalent is Sedbergh in Furness and Westmorland (formerly Cumbria, formerly West Riding of Yorkshire).

Birmingham has also had some prominence in the history of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers).

There seems to be a strong connection between prominent Quaker families and the manufacture of chocolate products....Cadbury's in Birmingham, Rowntree's in York and Fry's in Keynsham, near Bristol.

As with umpteen other places in England, Keynsham is associated -- whether via real life, or the lady's fiction -- with Jane Austen (one of my various literary "pet hates" -- I'm sure that really "it isn't her, it's me"). The place gets a brief mention in her Northanger Abbey : the book's heroine Catherine and her friends ride to "within view of the town of Keynsham". Per the novel, Catherine's childhood is spent in Fullerton, Hampshire -- a little way south of Andover.

Houghton, Hampshire is -- like the settlements in the two previous posts -- located on the River Test.

In the 14th Century the manor of Somborne was held by John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, third son of King Edward III and father of King Henry IV. All subsequent English monarchs are descendants from him. There is (or was, because last time I went past it was closed) a pub named after him close to the village.

British cinema buffs may be interested to learn (or, unlike me, would know already) that Gainsborough Film Studios were located from 1924 to 1951 at Hoxton, and not in the eponymous Lincolnshire town. By contrast, Ealing Studios are indeed in the west London district of Ealing.

The long running BBC television series Dixon of Dock Green was notionally based in the East End of London, with some outside scenes filmed in Wapping. However the closing scene of Jack Warner saying "Goodnight All" which ended each episode, was filmed at Ealing Grammar School for Boys, a blue lamp being erected for the purpose.

Southampton also has a pub called The Grapes, which was used as a backdrop for the film Titanic

Irvine was the location of Scotland's first official naturist beach. Another such amenity was located at Cambois in Northumberland (no longer permitted; indeed, in that part of the world the more clothes the better).

Shuttington was the birthplace of Lieutenant Charles George Bonner, one of two sailors awarded the VC for their action during the gun duel between HMS Dunraven, a WWI "Q-ship", and the submarine UC-71. The other was Petty Officer Ernest Herbert Pitcher. The whole crew were considered by the Board of Admiralty to be equally deserving of the medal, so in accordance with naval procedures the crew voted for one commissioned officer and one petty officer or seaman to receive the medal on behalf of the ship. PO Pitcher was born in Mullion, Cornwall.

Until recently, Cury had a pub named the Wheel Inn. There is, happily, a surviving establishment of that name - no longer a pub, but an Indian restaurant - in Rearsby, Leicestershire.

Grimsby was also originally a Danish settlement. Legend has it, that it was founded by a Danish fisherman called Grim
