Madron has a particular association with the naval hero Lord Nelson: thanks to the tradition that by an odd chain of events, the news of his death at the Battle of Trafalgar, 21/10/1805, first reached Britain -- unofficially -- at Penzance; whose "mother church" was that of nearby Madron; a few days after the battle. There is annually, on the nearest Sunday to October 21st, a Trafalgar Parade at Madron and a commemorative service in Madron church. In 1802 Lady Emma Hamilton -- Nelson's "love interest" -- bought him the country estate of Merton Place, in Merton -- now in the London Borough of Merton.
