Sempringham was a centre of the Puritan movement during the 17th century and the village curate, Samuel Skelton, sailed to Salem in Massachusetts, subsequently becoming pastor of the First Church of Salem, the original Puritan church in North America.
Another English Puritan cleric who sailed to Salem and preached alongside Skelton was Francis Higginson, formerly the minister at Claybrooke Magna in Leicestershire.
