The Battle of Lewisham, which took place on 13 August 1977 between 500 National Front supporters attempting to stage an anti-immigrant march and about 4000 Anti-Fascist opponents, is reminiscent of the much larger Battle of Cable Street, which took place on 4th October 1936 and resulted in about 2,000 members of the British Union of Fascists being prevented from marching through the East End, despite the efforts of 6,000 Metropolitan Policemen in support of the march. Estimates of the size of the opposing crowd vary, but are in the range 100,000 to 300,000. Cable Street is quite long and runs from the City of London via Wapping and Shadwell to Stepney, East London.
