At Wortwell is the grave of Ezekiel Blomfield (1778 -- 1818): Congregational minister, and compiler of religious works and works on natural history. A contemporary (by a narrow-ish margin) of his -- also a Christian minister-cum-naturalist -- was the much better-known Rev. Gilbert White (1720 -- 1793): who is of course strongly associated with Selborne, Hampshire -- his parish for longer periods than any other, and about the natural history of which, he wrote his master-work.

Selborne was once the centre of Hampshire's hop-growing district, which provided hops mainly for the four breweries which once existed in Alton.

Eastwood, Nottinghamshire; also shares its name with the surname of a renowned American film actor with life and work spanning the majority of the 20th century -- Burt, and Clint, respectively -- overall fairly similar re genres and type of roles.

Coupar Angus, Perth & Kinross, is or has been the site of a Cistercian abbey: that of Glenluce is ruined -- only a small section remains, of that of Coupar Angus.

Meikleour; and Henleaze (northern suburb of Bristol); are both the site, respectively, of hedges of considerable distinction; and very different kinds. Meikleour's is a beech hedge, planted in 1746: reputedly the longest hedge in Britain (a third of a mile), and highest in the world (100 feet). Henleaze's "Phoenix Hedge" is reckoned about 800 years old: composed of a mixture of woody-plant species -- eight of them, including ash, elm, and dog rose -- it is just under 300 feet long.

Durrington, Wiltshire -- close by Amesbury and Bulford -- also has near to the settlement, and in the parish with its name: prominent Neolithic settlement site(s). For Sandwick, Skara Brae; for Durrington, Durrington Walls and Woodhenge.

St. Ouen parish in Jersey is also twinned with a settlement in the French departement of Manche. Wimborne Minster's "twin" is Valognes; St. Ouen's is Coutances.

Wondering whether I'm reckoned to have thrown a spanner into the works with the above (Jersey parishes have been accepted and latched-onto in the game, a number of times in the quite recent past). If people wish: I'm ready to scrap the above, and do another association from Wimborne Minster (or someone else could have a go). Or maybe all participants except me, are taking a breather from Settlement Association :s ...

The Channel Islands are expressly permitted within the game, I’ll leave the floor to anyone with a creative brain to think of a new association!

I will tentatively offer up the following posting submission, but it can be disregarded if it does not meet with the accordance of the quiz....

St Brelade is another of the Jersey parishes that erected a memorial to those parish inhabitants as serving soldiers that were killed in the Great War of 1914-1918.

Taking this to mean the Jersey settlement of St Brelade without an 'i' . . .

St Brelade takes its name from a corruption of the name St Branwalator - a Celtic saint whose relics* were kept at the abbey at Milton Abbas in Dorset.

* - i.e. body parts; allegedly an arm or the head.

It was not altogether uncommon in the 18th century for landowners -- doing so for what they saw as aesthetic reasons -- to have a village which they owned, demolished; and re-erected in an alternative site in the area; often furnishing better accommodation in the new settlement, than there had been in the old -- still a practice which to modern eyes, seems monstrous. This happened re Milton Abbas, at the hands of Lord Milton, Earl of Dorchester -- he had the former village of Middleton razed, and replaced by the new Milton Abbas. Nuneham Courtenay -- a little way south-east of Oxford -- was the victim in that era, of a similar action on the part of the local magnate.

Amesbury, Wiltshire, is a rival claimant to Abingdon for the title of England's oldest town.
