Pollokshaws, Glasgow: is a name which also begins with that of a fish species ("sounds like", anyway :D).

Barnstaple in Devon also features -- in both cases, I think, not with factual name; but real location highly recognisable -- in a Lord Peter Wimsey mystery novel by Dorothy L. Sayers. (For Kirkcudbright, The Five Red Herrings; for Barnstaple, Have His Carcase.)

Just a note to @EbbwJunction1, about an error of mine yesterday (28/4), which I have only just realised. Responses to @AOwen's post #30,626, featuring Ely: I followed on from that one, with Wells. You did likewise, with Potters Bar -- beating me by a minute; which I have honestly failed to notice, until now. My "Wells" one was thus technically out of order, and I should have struck it out: you however, very forbearingly, just followed on from my Wells. Apologies !

In 2005, the Borough of Epsom and Ewell was rated by a British television programme, the best place in Britain to live. A controversial poll early this year, named (surprisingly?) Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire: as the worst place in the whole country, to live.

Between 1919 and 1925 cars were built at Aylesbury by Cubit Engineering. Another town with a car building history is Biggleswade where Berkeley cars were produced between 1956 and 1960.

Wrestlingworth was the location of the crime committed by the last woman to be publicly hanged in the UK.

Clerkenwell was the location of the crime committed by the last man to be publicly hanged in the UK.

You beat me by a whisker ! -- I was compiling a post on the very same connection; your post more succinct than mine !

Re Clerkenwell; a sub-division of that area, Hockley-in-the-Hole, was notable in the 17th / 18th centuries for much carrying-on of bull- and bear-baiting, and similar activities.

Also big on bear-baiting in times past, was Congleton, Cheshire -- in fact, that town is reputedly a bit bear-obsessed: pictures and effigies of the creatures all over the place there. A mocking verse about a reputed happening centuries ago:

Congleton rare, Congleton rare;
They sold the church Bible to buy a new bear.

Newbury, Berkshire, also gives its name to two separate battles in the English Civil War of the 1640s. "First and Second Middlewich" were in 1643, a number of months apart; Wiki seems unclear as to which side prevailed, in either. The two Battles of Newbury were in 1643 and 1644: the first was a Parliamentarian victory, the second was indecisive.

Middlewich in Cheshire East also lies on the line of the River Dane.

Deja vu with post #30601........

Middlewich is the confluence of 3 rivers (Dane, Croco, Wheelock) as is Rickmansworth (Chess, Gade, Colne).

Edit - beaten to posting by a couple of seconds!

The former Archbishop of Canterbury, George Carey, was born in Newbury. His successor Rowan Williams was born in Swansea.

There is an adaptation of the board game Monopoly, for Swansea. There is one likewise, for Manchester.

It is believed the Miles in Miles Platting dentoed the distance from Manchester. Another place with 'Miles' in it is Miles Green in Staffordshire.

Balterley has changed county having previously been in Cheshire.

Abingdon has also changed county having been in Berkshire prior to 1974 and is now in Oxfordshire.

Also mentioned at least by implication, in a folk-song about poaching and poachers (those regarded in song, as the good guys) is Arnold, Nottinghamshire -- near Nottingham -- song Thorneymoor Woods, said venue located close to Arnold. The song from further south, is The Eynsham Chaps; who target Lord Abingdon's manor, to relieve him of some game which he anyway won't miss.

The controversial journalist and author Christopher Hitchens (1949 -- 2011) was born in Waterlooville. Back to Tavistock, I'm afraid (enough posts have gone by, to make this legit.) -- some of Hitchens's schooling took place there.
