(Was in the process of making a post -- I was reading #30,220's settlement as Combe Down, immediately south of Bath -- the "Combe" usually with one "o"; but, I have the impression, occasionally spelt with two. Will make so bold as to proceed...) A favourite detective-novel series of mine is that by Peter Lovesey, with as principal character Detective Superintendent Peter Diamond -- the grouchy but astute head of the Bath police's C.I.D. Though centring on the city of Bath, the books range over various settings in England's "mid-south-west". A recent one, The Finisher, includes a good deal of action involving, under Combe Down, its warren of old quarries and mines; and the long former (and when it was in use, nasty) railway tunnel. An earlier "Diamond" novel, The Stone Wife, divides its action between Bath; and Bridgwater, Somerset.
