By the sea at Aldeburgh is the Beach Lookout (tower built for purposes of shipping-related observation) in which the South African writer Laurens van der Post (1906 -- 1996) -- (considered by King Charles as a significant mentor of his), who, lifelong, largely divided his time between South Africa and Britain; lived for a considerable time in the latter part of his life. Earlier, during the 1930s, van der Post lived and farmed for a spell at Tetbury, Gloucestershire -- by an odd coincidence, the nearest town -- much later -- to the country residence of Charles.
