Inverness is also twinned with a settlement in the French departement of Loire-Atlantique. Cowbridge's "twin" is Clisson; Inverness's, La Baule-Escoublac.

The actor Pete Postlethwaite (1946 -- 2011) was born in Warrington. One of the many "character" roles played by Postlethwaite, was -- in the TV adaptation of Bernard Cornwell's Sharpe novels -- the loathsome psychotic villain Sergeant Obadiah Hakeswill, the bane of Richard Sharpe's army life. In the books, it is Hakeswill who initially recruits Sharpe into the British Army, in a public house in Sheffield.

A curfew bell, rung at 8pm on weekdays from Michaelmas to Lady Day, ties with the romantic local legend of Blanche Heriot, marked by a statue of her and the bell at Chertsey Bridge. She was a legendary heroine from Chertsey, whose story was brought to a wider public in two works by the Chertsey-born early Victorian writer Albert Smith. He was born on 24th May 1816, and died on 23rd May 1816 in Fulham.

Really?....so he died the day before he was born. Some mistake surely, Ed!

Meanwhile....Chelsea - only a couple of miles downriver from Fulham - also once had a coal-fired power station on the banks of the Thames.

Kipling's poem Merrow Down (an "outgrowth" of his Just So Stories -- poem about Surrey millennia ago) mentions the names of Guildford -- which would be, far in the future, the approximate site of the poem's action; and Whitby -- context of Ancient Britons doing barter transactions with Phoenician traders involving among other things, "Whitby jet".

Whoops .... he actually died on 23rd May 1860 - apologies!

Moving on ... St Nicholas Church, Boarhunt, is supported by the National Churches Trust. Another church of the same name supported by the Trust is to be found at Wickham, Hampshire.

Funtley's pub is called the Miner's Arms. Name seems a bit incongruous for a non-industrial milieu; it appears that the pub's first landlord was also the contractor for the boring of the nearby tunnel, in building of the Eastleigh -- Fareham rail line: for which job he hired a squad of Welsh miners, one of whom was given the privilege of naming the pub. Carsington, Derbyshire -- near Wirksworth -- has a pub with essentially the same name.

(Punctuation-pedantry: the establishment at Funtley is, indeed, the Miner's Arms -- as though referring to just one miner. That at Carsington is the "Miners Arms" -- needing, but lacking, an apostrophe somewhere.)

Barwick-in-Elmet in West Yorkshire was also once administered by the Skyrack Wapentake.

While the bolded settlement is distinguished by its suffix: there are several other Barwicks in other parts of England (and one in Georgia, USA). One such is Barwick, Somerset: just south of Yeovil.

As done re very many settlements: there is a feature on the Internet, "Best things to do and days out in Chilton Cantelo". Unlike a large number of these Net things; this one seems basically to play fair, not involving stuff very considerable distances away: several attractions mentioned are at Montacute, Somerset -- only a few miles from Chilton C.

I can't resist "twinnings", especially when there is involvement of what felt to be obscure and unlikely places. Southampton is also twinned with a settlement in the French departement of Seine-Maritime. Newton Longville's "twin" is Longueville-sur-Scie (the "obscure and unlikely" pair); Southampton's is Le Havre.

Lismore was for many years the home of Irish travel writer and cyclist Dervla Murphy. She also lived for a shorter period in Settle, North Yorkshire.

Chatburn, Lancashire, also lies on the River Ribble.

[Dervla Murphy -- died last year, aged 90 -- is my very favourite travel writer: shrewd, delightfully humorous, and in various ways most splendidly eccentric.]

The Gordon Schools is a six-year, non denominational comprehensive co-educational secondary school located in Huntly. It takes pupils from several primary schools located in that area of Aberdeenshire, including the one in the village of Insch.
