Newells Preparatory School was founded in 1887 by Rev. William Henry Webb and was originally known as Wykeham Hall, after it's first location in Lee-on-Solent. The school, now known as Newells, came to Lower Beeding, Sussex in 1946. It moved to Handcross, West Sussex in 1968 and merged with Brighton College in 2011.

P G Wodehouse made use of place names from the south of England for naming many of his characters. Lord Bosham was the unseen (I think) oldest son and heir to the pig-fancying Earl of Emsworth (Hampshire).

The former French Emperor Napoleon III, his wife Empress Eugenie and son Louis Napoleon are entombed in the crypt at St Michael's Abbey, although it was only Eugenie who was a resident of Farnborough while alive. When the Second Empire was overthrown after France's defeat in the Franco-Prussian War, the empress and her husband took permanent refuge in England and first settled at Camden Place in Chiselhurst, Kent before moving to Farnborough in 1885.

Wiki's article on Telford gives, in its "persons of note" section, numerous non-modern-times people associated with constituent settlements of Telford before it was Telford; which seems rather like cheating to me, but I'm somewhat shamefacedly going along with it. One such is William Ball (1795 -- 1852), an iron-puddler born in Horsehay: reckoned the heaviest man in England during his lifetime -- he weighed 40 stone. He's put in the shade by a slightly earlier holder of this record, whom I've mentioned before in the game: Daniel Lambert (1770 -- 1809), born in Leicester -- who reached 52 stone-plus. Lambert was not a glutton, and had a fairly athletic lifestyle -- it would seem that he had the bad luck to have a strange metabolism.

Former President of South Africa Nelson Mandela received the Freedom of the City of Liverpool in July 1994.
Some years earlier, in July 1987, Mandela had also received the Freedom of the City of Kingston upon Hull.

In the years 55 & 54 BC, when Julius Caesar was carrying out his 'Special Military Operation' (i.e. invasion of Britain), his landing point on the coast of eastern Kent was thought for many years to have been in the vicinity of Deal, and several monuments were erected to this effect. (More recent archaeological studies indicate landing points slightly further north at Pegswell Bay appear more likely).

When things started to get serious in 43 AD with a full-scale invasion initiated by the Emperor Claudius, the landing point was again on the eastern coast of Kent, with some good historical and archaeological for a two-pronged attack by the Romans with a second landing at Chichester, West Sussex.

Strettington lies just south of the village of Waterbeach. There is another, better-known, Waterbeach in Cambridgeshire -- five or six miles north-east of Cambridge.

Maidenhead has a passing (neutral) mention in John Betjeman's famed poem from most of a century ago, lambasting Slough as a hotbed of the "new barbarism" -- some feel that he was over-hard on the poor place. He was more given to praising -- whether in verse or prose -- settlements in Britain, for their delightful qualities: was very complimentary toward Lavenham, Suffolk.

John Lennon and Yoko Ono directed a 1970 film called Apotheosis based on a 17 minute hot air balloon ascent from Lavenham Market Place. Earlier footage had been filmed in Basingstoke but had been rejected by the pair.

The name of Basingstoke features in the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta Ruddigore, as a "magic word" to be used between the character Sir Despard and his mentally-disturbed wife Margaret, to calm her and bring her back to reality. Another settlement which gets a glancing mention in a -- different -- G & S operetta, is Harwich (Essex), in the "nightmare song" in Iolanthe.
