Forfar Athetic FC will forever be linked to East Fife FC (who play at Methil, Fife) through the famous score line East Fife Four, Forfar Five made famous by Eric Morecambe. It has actually happened, albeit after penalties in July 2018.

Jane Austen -- "the woman who went everywhere" -- spent a holiday in Dawlish in 1802; later complaining about the town's "particularly pitiful and wretched library". A generation or so later, in an episode which I've previously mentioned in this game: Charles Dickens got very pee'd-off with Chelmsford, Essex; for, when in the town on matters to do with his work, being unable to get a newspaper there on a Sunday. (Wonder whether there might be possible mileage in a book about writers of assorted kinds, and their problems with settlements which fell short of their wishes re provision of reading material?)

There were two venues, far apart in these islands, which were "happening" places first-and-foremost in the second quarter of the 20th century. The Ace of Spades Roadhouse near Tolworth: with dancing until the small hours, a large round-the-clock restaurant, and sundry other amusements; and the Rinkha in Islandmagee, Co. Antrim (near Larne and Whitehead): offering similar fun, in the decorous and subdued context of Northern Ireland in those times. The Ace of Spades is no more, having burnt down in the 1950s; the Rinkha is still in business today, though nowadays once more as it was before becoming a trendy hang-out: a general store specialising in a wide assortment of ice-cream.

Canewdon, Essex -- just south of the River Crouch estuary -- has long had a reputation for "witchy" doings; though little in the way of witch trials seems to have happened there.

The Nethergate Brewery was established in Clare in 1986 by Ian Hornsey and his business partner Dick Burge. In 2005 the brewery site was moved across the county border to Pentlow in Essex but, since 2017, the brewery has been based back in Suffolk, in the hamlet of Rodbridge.

Winchester is also twinned with a settlement in the German State of Hesse. Manningtree's "twin" is Frankenberg an der Eder; Winchester's is Giessen.

There took place near Longtown in November 1542, the Battle of Solway Moss: part of a "face-off" between Kings Henry VIII of England, and James V of Scotland -- Scottish advance into England, in reaction to recent English ditto into Scotland: repelled by the English. James V, dejected and discouraged, died -- aged only thirty -- shortly afterward, at the palace at Falkland, Fife.

There is a plaque in Linlithgow commemorating the character in the Star Trek television series, Montgomery "Scotty" Scott -- Chief Engineer of the spaceship Enterprise -- who according to Star Trek lore, will be born in Linlithgow in the year 2222. With the legendary wizard Merlin's being closely associated with Carmarthen (per the tale, he was begotten by an incubus demon on a daughter of the King of Dyfed); and should one favour the unusual elaboration re Merlin, in T.H. White's version of the Arthurian legends, The Once and Future King -- wherein Merlin is living backwards through history; he will be born at some time far in the future -- a plaque with similar import concerning Merlin, ought perhaps to feature in Carmarthen.

The Conservative politician from the 70s and 80s Francis Pym was born near Penpergwm. Not surprisingly, he went to school at Eton.

The church of St John the Baptist, Leamington Spa was built between 1877 and 1878, and contains a two-manual pipe organ built by Henry Jones dating from 1878. Henry Jones (1922 - 1900) built a large number of organs, mostly of small to moderate size, but well-built and voiced.
His early work was mainly centred on repairing old instruments, but in 1861 he secured the contract to build the organ at St. Matthew’s Church, Bethnal Green; this no longer exists, having been destroyed during the Blitz in 1940.

St. John's Church, Worksop is the parish church of Worksop, and was built between 1867 and 1868 by the architect Robert Clarke and his son Robert Charles Clarke. The former also designed the Oxford County Pauper Lunatic Asylum, later known as the Littlemore Hospital, on Sandford Road in Littlemore, Oxfordshire in 1843.
