Happenings around Ballinrobe, brought the word "boycott" into the English language -- from an episode in 1880, of acute friction involving grievances over farm administration and ownership: wherein Charles Cunningham Boycott, land agent for the local (British) landowner -- was, for trying to enforce his boss's policies in these matters, shunned by the majority of the local population. Boycott left Ireland at the end of that year, and continued in his profession, at Flixton, Suffolk (just south-west of Bungay); where he died in 1897.
(Note re railway matters: the Wiki article on Ballinrobe is very copious and informative; but contains an inaccuracy which often seems to crop up, and has been discussed on these Forums. Wiki states that the Claremorris -- Ballinrobe branch line lost its passenger service in 1930, but continued to run for freight until the beginning of 1960. It's reckoned certain, that this is a widespread misapprehension: in fact, the branch continued in passenger, as well as freight, service; until it was, indeed, abandoned at the beginning of '60.)
