Lords of the manor of Iron Acton for a number of centuries, were the Poyntz family: the name commemorated with some prominence in the village, especially in the church and its Poyntz Chapel. A person of the same name -- how closely connected with the Iron Acton Poyntzes, is not clear -- gave his name to Poyntzpass (Counties Down / Armagh) -- viz. Lieutenant Charles Poyntz, who in the protracted hostilities in Ireland in the 16th century: achieved at that spot, an English victory against a more numerous Irish force.

St Michael's church in Llanfihangel was ruined rebuilt by Thomas Nicholson, architect, of Hereford, who also planned/designed much of Llandrindod Wells, Radnorshire.

Llandrindod Wells is often abbreviated to ‘Landod’, while Rossington in South Yorkshire is often abbreviated to ‘Rosso’.

Near Milnthorpe is the Dallam Tower estate and deer park. This is one of the venues featured in The Lancashire Witches -- the best-known of the many novels by the 19th-century author William Harrison Ainsworth. Another such featuring in the book, is Whalley, Lancashire (near Clitheroe).

York is said to have been the capital of the Brythonic kingdom of Deira. Some sources suggest that the original capital was at Brough on Humber, East Riding.

Pelsall has a pub -- now dull-ly and wimpishly named the Queens -- which formerly bore the name of the Block and Chopper. Burham, Kent -- between Rochester and Maidstone -- has in similar vein, a pub / restaurant called the Butchers Block.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle had links with Ingleton and surrounding area; it has been claimed that there is evidence that the inspiration for his name "Sherlock Holmes", came from thereabouts. However -- some of Doyle's historical novels are part-set in the area of Lymington, Hampshire; wherein there is a hamlet called Shirley Holms. Who knows?

Stonehaven in Aberdeenshire also has an open-air salt water pool.

Rather them than me -- though I gather it's heated.

The Scottish author Lewis Grassic Gibbon attended school in Stonehaven. He spent the latter part of his life, and died, in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire.

Beaconsfield is closely associated with the 19th-century politician Benjamin Disraeli -- it was his constituency; and in 1876 Queen Victoria, an admirer of his, created him Earl of Beaconsfield. Disraeli's political arch-enemy William Ewart Gladstone (whom Vicky loathed), had a rather parallel relationship with Hawarden, Flintshire.

Llanidloes takes its name from the 7th century Saint Idloes, whose Saint's Day falls on 6th September each year.

This is hot on the heels of Saint Rhuddlad's Day on 4th September. Saint Rhuddlad lends his name to the village of Llanrhyddlad on Anglesey.

BTW - today, 13th November, is Saint Gredifael's Day

Saint Llibio, the patron saint of Llanllibio and dedicatee of its long-demolished church, was a disciple of Saint Cybi (born c. 480 at Callington in Cornwall and a cousin of St David, as well as being (it is claimed) a kinsman of King Arthur).
