Hounslow lies close by the line of the Roman road known as the Devil's Highway: London -- Silchester (Hampshire). Also on line of that road is Crowthorne, Berkshire.

Carstairs in South Lanarkshire also has a top security criminal psychiatric hospital in its environs (Broadmoor just outside Crowthorne).

Dingle, County Kerry, also shares its name with a character(s)-surname from a British TV drama series in the generally "light" sphere thereof. Respectively, Flight-Lieutenant Carstairs in Allo, Allo; and the Dingle family, one of the "clans" in Emmerdale.

Have been trying to find out how the locals pronounce Smerwick (when they're not using the Irish name, Ard na Caithne) -- "Smur-wick", or "Smerrick" ? -- with view pronunciation comparison with similar names elsewhere in the British Isles; sadly, no success re the Kerry settlement. Have discovered, though, re Lerwick (Shetland): the local folk pronounce it "Lur-wick" -- i.e. not "Lerrick", on the model of Berwick-on-Tweed.

Lerwick means 'Bay of Clay'. Players of this game - an astute lot, in my estimation - will not be surprised that clay also forms part of the place name origin of Claygate in Surrey, which lies on thick beds of the stuff.

Thinking of my favourite thriller writer, Val McDermid -- two of her most acclaimed series of thrillers have as central character, respectively: Kate Branningan, private investigator, who lives and does her stuff in Manchester; and , in contrast, Lindsay Gordon / journalist / Glasgow.

Writer Daniel Defoe was educated at the Rev James Fisher 's boarding school in Pixham. In later life - circa 1706-1710 - he (Defoe) lived at Hillgate in Gateshead, Tyne & Wear (at the time, Co Durham).

Newton Solney has a pub called the Unicorn. Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, is the seat of an undertaking splendidly titled The Spirited Unicorn Pub Company.

Edendork in County Tyrone also has a GAA club that plays in the Tyrone Intermediate Football Club Championship.

These Irish names ! -- Edendork, of all things -- perhaps from, Adam was a right dork to let himself be tempted to eat the fruit <D ...

Edendork's Gaelic Athletic Association side, is called St. Malachy's. That of Charlestown, County Mayo: is called Charlestown Sarsfields.

Charlestown was designed and built from 1846 by Charles Strickland, land agent to the 14th Viscount Dillon; the settlement was originally to be named Newtown Dillon. Viscount Dillon was born and died at his country seat, Ditchley Park, near Charlbury, Oxfordshire.

Concerning the pub game of "Aunt Sally" (throwing things at a "humanoid" target) -- the Aunt Sally Singles World Championship takes place annually at the Charlbury Beer Festival. The first World Championship for Aunt Sally pairs, was held in 2019 in the Bell Inn, Launton, Oxfordshire. (The same game, or one very closely related, is played in France: where it is called the Jeu de Massacre. Bloodthirsty lot, those Frogs ...)
