Yorkshire's anthem, Ilkley Moor (On Ilkla Moor Baht 'at) is sung to a hymn tune entitled Cranbrook, composed by Thomas Clark (1775-1859) of Canterbury.

Not expressing any doubt -- this just emphasising to me, that I'm no kind of scholar about sacred music: I knew there was a hymn tune called "Cranbrook"; but didn't know it was this tune. Have never to the best of my knowledge, heard a hymn sung to this tune; but likely, I don't move in the right hymnological circles.

Kendal RFC plays in the Regional 1 North West Division, a level five league of the RFU. Their home games are at Mint Bridge Stadium, which has a capacity of 3,500. Wirral RFC play at the same level, and are based in Thornton Common Road, Clatterbridge, Wirral.

Sir Philip Toosey, who was the British officer in charge of building the real bridges on the River Kwai as a POW in the Second World War (and whose conduct was nothing like that of his fictionalized character in the 1957 film) is buried in Landican. He was born in Oxton, also on the Wirral.

Much of the land on which Oxton is situated, was part of the estate of the Earl of Shrewsbury: commemorated in various street and road names, after assorted names with relevance to the noble family; also the village's Shrewsbury Arms pub.

Several of the founders of the magazine Private Eye had been educated at Shrewsbury School; the current editor Ian Hislop, however, went to Ardingly College, Ardingly, West Sussex.

There is a tendency in Sussex with settlements whose names end in "-ly": for that syllable to be pronounced not -- as one might think -- "lee"; but "lye". This is the case with Ardingly; also with Hellingly (East Sussex, north of Eastbourne).

Seaford College is nowhere near the town of that name, the nearest settlement to it is at East Lavington

Having looked it up -- agreed: this is mad, even for England <D. Shaldon, Devon -- near Teignmouth -- also has a church dedicated to St. Peter.

The ‘Upton Pyne’ is a large cooking apple, as is the Bramley, which is a settlement near Leeds.

HMS Wexham, a "Ham Class" minesweeper, was launched in 1954 and sold to the French navy the following year. HMS Sidlesham, on the other hand, was sold to the Sussex Police in 1967 and after many different uses was abandoned on the Thames foreshore at Battersea, where as far as I know she still is.

Michael Flanders, half of the 1960s comedy duo Flanders and Swann, often made fun of Donald Swann for living in Battersea. Donald Swann was born in Llanelli (at the time known as Llanelly), Carmarthenshire.

Felinfoel is one of a number of places in Great Britain, having in their purlieus a perceivedly scenic area which is likened -- sometimes incongruously -- to Switzerland / Swiss scenes. That of the Carmarthenshire settlement, involves picturesque double reservoirs on the river near the village, called Swiss Valley. Folkestone, Kent, has a cliffside spot (featuring a caravan park) called Little Switzerland.
