Bettiscombe The parish church, dedicated to St Stephen, has two windows in the chancel and possibly one in the west tower dating from about 1400, although the rest of the structure was rebuilt by the Victorian architect John Hicks in 1862. Outside the Gorge Café in South Street, Dorchester is a stone plaque commemorating that the novelist Thomas Hardy worked as a pupil to John Hicks between 1856 and 1862. The firm was responsible for many buildings in the area and Hardy's father (Thomas senior) also worked for the firm, in 1856 undertaking repairs on Woodsford Castle in the village and civil parish of Woodsford, Dorset.
