An early twentieth century rector of Rusper, Edward Synott, faced ecclesiastical trial for misconduct following the publication of a memoir laying down the misdeeds of his parishioners (it was entitled 'Five Years Hell in a Country Parish'). He was cleared of the charges, and remained rector of the parish for a further 13 years, which I'm sure wasn't awkward at all. A few years later the rector of Stiffkey in Norfolk, Harold Davidson, known as ' The prostitutes' padre', was tried for illicit relationships with young women. He was unfrocked, and killed by a lion in Skegness in 1937 while preaching from the creature's cage.
