The battle of Gafulford -- in or around 825 AD -- is suggested by some, as having taken place near Lewtrenchard: there are alternative theories; it seems altogether to be a battle about which remarkably little is known. It is apparently recorded that forces of Cornishmen, and Devonians, took part in the battle; but it's not known whether they were fighting each other, or in alliance against other -- unspecified -- party or parties. Another battle in that general era, with an element of mystery; is that of Brunanburh in 937: the English on one side, against an alliance of Scots, Strathclyders, and Dublin Vikings. The big puzzle about Brunanburh, concerns where it took place (basically, no "leads" from the name by which the battle is known): by most reckonings, somewhere in the northerly parts of England -- but there is a long list of possible candidates, including Barton-upon-Humber in North Lincolnshire.
