Beaumaris's origin was at the end of the 13th Century; when King Edward I, having newly conquered Wales, established a castle there, around which the town in time, grew. Edward didn't mess about, as regards his newly conquered Welsh subjects: considering the inhabitants of Llanfaes, just north of the new settlement, potentially troublesome; he had them moved en bloc, ten miles south-westward in Anglesey, to a fresh site which appropriately became known as Newborough.
