Par in Cornwall, also tends to be the subject of predictable cryptic-crossword-type clues. With Elgin, they involve the Spanish spirituous liquor, or marbles; with Par, it's always golf.

The harbour at Charlestown in Cornwall, like that at Par, was developed to facilitate the export of copper ore and china clay.

(Incidentally, for those who couldn't get to the match, Tummery Athletic beat Strathroy Harps 5-0)

Charmouth's name is derived from the Saxon Cernmunde, meaning 'mouth of a stony river'.

Another settlement whose name has a rocky river derivation is Stony Stratford* near Milton Keynes.

* Anglo-Saxon for 'stony ford on a road' - the road being Watling Street, the Roman road.

The villages of Offord Cluny and Offord d'Arcy now sit together in the civil parish of "The Offords" within the non-metropolitan district of Huntingdonshire, which in local government terms is part of Cambridgeshire. (How complicated do we make our local government structures!)

Northgate st Chester consists of Grade 1 or 2 listed buildings, the exterior not to be altered, there is a similar call for Gloucester to preserve its historic character by imposing guidelines as to how shop fronts should appear

In the English Civil War / War of the Three Kingdoms, Gloucester was a Parliamentarian / Puritan stronghold. In contrast, Worcester -- not very far to the north -- was probably the country's most Royalist city.

Good old twin towns -- never fail you ! Bradford also has a twin town in the German State of Nordrhein-Westfalen. Portsmouth's "twin" is Duisburg, Bradford's is Hamm. (Hamm is the place with big rail marshalling yards which, in World War II, we were always trying to knock out by bombing; but never with lasting success.)

The polymath Joseph Priestley (1733 -- 1804) was born in Birstall. His greatest fame owes to his being reckoned to have discovered oxygen; but he was involved in many other fields -- including being a serious, if idiosyncratic, Christian. He was, briefly and none too happily, a Nonconformist minister in Needham Market, Suffolk.

I believe there was a pop number current decades ago, whose lyrics suggested that in the above-bolded settlement, everything was "kind of groovy". Another -- more raucous -- such, hymned the joys of Margate.

Bournemouth used to have the shell house in Southbourne, dedicated to the creator's son who died of meningitis in 1948

Ireland was the venue for the European Land Sailing Championships in September 2017, when they were held on Bettystown beach. The previous occasion of Ireland being the hosts was in 1983, when they were held in Newcastle, County Down.

Rival types of cold-smoked haddock are associated respectively with Eyemouth; and settlements further north. Eyemouth's speciality is the Eyemouth Pale: of a lighter, golden colour, and supposedly a subtler flavour, than the rival -- Finnan haddie, associated with and named from either Findon, Aberdeenshire; or Findhorn, Moray. I am plumping at random, for Findhorn.

The Aberdeen suburb of Footdee is also a former fishing settlement, no longer functioning as such.

Cartmel lies on the small River Eea (there can't be many rivers in Britain with no consonants in their names !), which also runs through nearby Cark.
