Glensburgh is said to be the birthplace of the mother of William Wallace - the 13th Century Scottish knight and leader during the First Scottish War of independence.

Wallace's father is believed to be from the Renfrewshire village of Elderslie.

Frank Hornby, inventor of Meccano (and, of course, Hornby trains) lived for many years in Maghull. As well as being a successful inventor and entrepreneur he was for a while MP for Everton.

Soho was, of course, the location of Boulton and Watt's Soho Foundry. Matthew Boulton is the less well known of the partners but was a man of many talents. He pioneered modern methods of manufacturing coinage for the Royal Mint and was instrumental in getting Parliament to establish an assay office in Birmingham. Before that all products made in the West Midlands and needing to be hallmarked had to be taken to Chester.

Congleton was notorious for bear-baiting in the early 17th Century, the story being that they spent money collected for a new bible for the church on a new, more aggressive bear instead. The Paris Garden in Southwark was also a well known location. Bear baiting was banned by the Commonwealth government in the Civil War and never really regained popularity again afterwards, being finally prohibited by Act of Parliament in 1835.

Staying with a watery theme, Godalming on the Wey was once connected to the south coast via the Wey and Arun Canal, which ran across country to Pallingham Lock near Pulborough, West Sussex, where it entered the Arun.

The coat of arms of Halifax features an image of the severed head of John the Baptist.
Another settlement whose coat of arms formerly included John the Baptist's head (until the design was changed in 1934) is Penzance.

Near Releath is the granite boulder formation of "Men-Amber", thought to be a fallen logan or rocking stone. Another logan stone can be found at "Whooping Rock" on Easdon Down near North Bovey, Devon.
