The present civil parish of Hordle is somewhat smaller than the 3,854 acres it used to contain, but still includes the interestingly named hamlets of Tiptoe and Everton.

For a while in the latter part of the 19th century, there was at Tiptoe the base for the activities of the eccentric religious sect sometimes called the "New Forest Shakers", headed by Mary Ann Girling (1827 -- 1886). This lady was born at Little Glemham, Suffolk -- between Wickham Market and Saxmundham.

Since July 2007, the former Primitive Methodist Church on Leyland Lane has been home to the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Apostles. There's a similarly named Church, although dedicated to just one Apostle (St Andrew) in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset.

The name of Notton (City of Wakefield District, Yorkshire) is also a palindrome.

The industrialist and plumber Thomas Crapper (1836 -- 1910) -- the subject of more toilet humour than he probably deserves -- was born in Thorne. He died in Anerley, London Borough of Bromley

The Cowley area was transformed after 1912 when William Morris bought the former Oxford Military College and moved Morris Motors Limited into it from its former premises in Oxford. The Oxford Bus Museum and the Morris Motors Collection are in Long Hanborough. The Bus Museum has a collection of 40 historic buses and coaches that operated in Oxfordshire, plus relics of Oxford's former horse tramways; the Morris Motors museum has a dozen historic vehicles built by Nuffield Organisation companies, mainly Morris Motors.

The village school at Black Bourton was designed by the architect Sir George Gilbert Scott and built in 1865. Another, earlier, educational work by him was the School and Master's House, Hartshill, Stoke on Trent, which was built in 1840.

I can't resist anything to do with J.R.R. Tolkien. The family being Catholic: one of his sons, John, entered the priesthood. For a good while, his parish was Hartshill; on visits, JRRT stayed with him at the presbytery. At least one of Tolkien's sons was a pupil at the Catholic boarding school of Stonyhurst -- nearest town Clitheroe. On journeys between there, and home in Oxford; JRRT garnered various ideas for scenes / places in the Middle-Earth "universe" of his writings.

St Michael's Church, Brough, is a large building with an impressive tower. The oldest parts date from the Norman period, and may have suffered during William I of Scotland's attack on the castle in 1174. The church was enlarged in the 14th century, to add the north aisle, and in the early 16th century when most of the existing structure was built. The tower was constructed by Thomas Blenkinsop of the nearby settlement and civil parish of Helbeck in 1513.

In the late eighteenth century, Helbeck Hall was the residence of industrialist John Metcalf Carleton, who in 1775 built a folly on the hillside overlooking the hall which was called the Fox Tower. The tower was sketched in 1831 by the famous artist J M W Turner, who was born in Covent Garden, London, but spent much of his childhood in Brentford, Middlesex.

Great Ayton was the boyhood home of the British explorer and navigator James Cook. Although born in nearby Marton, the Cook family moved to the village when he was eight years old and lived there until he was sixteen.

Westport, Co. Mayo, also has a namesake settlement in New Zealand. (N.Z.'s Marton was actually renamed thus in 1869, in honour of Cook.)
