Also "pronounced not like it's spelt", is Weobley, Herefordshire (north-west of Hereford): pronounced "Webbly", whereas the Greater Manchester settlement is "Altringham".

Near Godshill is an estate with the rather unfortunate name of Sandy Balls: the property a hundred years ago, of the naturalist, anthropologist and traveller Ernest Westlake; who inaugurated the movement "The Order of Woodcraft Chivalry" (semi-surviving at the present day, as the Woodcraft Folk) -- an early-20th-century "hippie-like" easy-going and non-military parallel to the Scouting movement which had been founded about the same time. The estate was the venue for many of the Order's activities. Westlake was born in 1855, in nearby Fordingbridge.

Oddstock lies on the River Ebble, a couple of miles short of its confluence with the abovementioned (Wiltshire and Dorset) Avon. Some ten miles westward and upstream, near the source of the Ebble, lies the village of Ebbesbourne Wake.

Sevenoaks lost most of the trees which give the town its name in the great storm of 1987, as did Ashenbank wood near Cobham, Kent, in both cases it will be many years before the replacement trees have matured

The present family seat of the Earls of Darnley is Netherwood House, Thornbury, Herefordshire (near Bromyard). In this role previously, was Cobham Hall, at the above-bolded Kentish village.

Ocle Pychard was the birthplace of the prominent military officer George Carpenter, 1st Baron Carpenter of Killaghy (1657 -- 1732). The Killaghy of his title (where it seems he spent little if any time) is near Mullinahone, Co. Tipperary -- north-east of Clonmel.

Kilkenny lends its name to a well-known brand of Irish Red Ale, which was brewed at the erstwhile St Francis Abbey brewery in the city.

Another producer of the same characteristic style of ale is the Heaney Brewery, located north of the border in Bellaghy, Co. London/Derry.

There is in Clanabogan, a living and working community for people with mental handicaps, following the principles set up by Rudolf Steiner. At Kings Langley, Hertfordshire, there was until 2019 a school run on those principles.

Truro is the originating-place of a traditional Cornish mummers' play, formerly (erroneously) thought to come from Mylor in Cornwall. Wantage, Oxfordshire, is the home of a similar piece of folk-theatre.

At Letcombe Bassett there is a downland Site of Special Scientific Interest, host to many species of butterfly, including some scarce ones. Another excellent butterfly venue is Rodborough, Gloucestershire (near Stroud).

Marple, Greater Manchester: also had its name borrowed by Agatha Christie, to name one of her sleuthing characters.

Bradford's coat of arms has the figure of a goat, as one of the supporters. In former times -- but no longer -- the coat of arms of Gateshead also had a goat motif: the creature's head.

St. Albans is also twinned with a settlement in Denmark. Lancaster's "twin" is Aalborg; St. Albans's, Odense.

Much of the Inspector Morse TV series was filmed in Oxford (it seems Morse & Lewis walked or drove under the Hertford Bridge just about every day)
However many scenes purported to be within some Oxford college or other were filmed elsewhere - including St Albans Abbey, and at Eton College in the Berkshire town of Eton.
