Another settlement with a "Lox-" name, is Loxton in Somerset, a little way south-east of Weston-Super-Mare. Very different name-derivations for the Sheffield community, and the Somerset one. It is thought that Loxley's name comes from the Old English words lox = lynx, and leah = glade; though the Eurasian lynx is reckoned to have become extinct in Britain, a considerable while before 1000 A.D. ... ? Loxton is so named because the small river called the Lox Yeo (seemingly innumerable rivers in these parts, bear the name "Yeo" !) joins at that point, the River Axe. The name "Lox Yeo" has attributed to it a Celtic language-origin: meaning either "Winding Stream", or "Bright One".
